Nasty Tiff Triggers Labor Woes at 'GH'
Carolyn Hinsey

Alexis goes into premature labor today on "General Hospital," thanks to the nasty Alcazar.

"She's taking a stroll in the park and she runs into the big bad man," says Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays the legal eagle.

Alexis an Alcazar spar over her sister Kristina's death, and suddenly she doubles over in pain.

Alexis wasn't exactly having the most stress-free pregnancy anyway," Grahn says. "I think the baby just decides, 'Get me out of here. I can't take this anymore.' She goes into pretty severe labor right away."

Proving what a bad buy he is, Alcazar walks away."

"But my ex-husband from my other [soap opera] life happens to be walking by and helps," says Grahn. She is referring to actor Lane Davies, who joined "GH" this week as Cameron. He played debonair Mason Capwell opposite Grahn's fiery Julia Wainwright on "Santa Barbara" from 1985-92.

"He had to pick me up from a lying-down position," says Grahn. " I think I've put on a pound or two since I was 26 -I had a baby [daughter Kate, now 4] and all -so he said, 'Do you think you have enough strength to stand up?' or else he would have had to drag Alexis out of that park."

The action picks up at the hospital where Alexis gives birth.

Viewers know that Ned claimed paternity even though Sonny is the baby's real father - which no one knows but Alexis and Ned.

"Sonny is away [rescuing Brenda]. Alexis asks for Ned -'Get Ned!' It's a very difficult delivery. I am screaming so much, you'd think that I am giving birth to a 14-pound 2 year-old. It's actually very upsetting."

Alexis delivers a girl, who she names Kristina, but the baby is immediately taken to neonatal, where the anxious mom begs her to live.

"Alcazar shows up again, and she goes after him with scissors," Grahn says. "She's not thinking clearly."

In the weeks to come, Sonny will also show up. "He needs something from her," hints the actress.

"I think Alexis will be a great mom, in spite of herself," Grahn says. "What we have in common is that we spent our lives looking for the love of our life and didn't realize it would come in the form of our daughters. That's true for me, and I think it will turn out to be true for her."
